Vista and WinNT domain

Is it possible to add a Vista system to WinNT domain?

Yes, assuming it Vista Business or higher.

I am not sure, since NT 4 Server is so old, but I guess if it supports IPv4 and Vista supports IPv4, it should work. I am going to setup a VM Ware for this right now, will report back later.

Yeh - it should work but it's certainly not recommeded - you really are better off connecting it to a Windows Server System (2003 onwards, including Small Business Server). To get the best potential, Windows Server "Longhorn" :o)

You can see drives from a NT 4.0 Domain systems and share them as needed. Same for printers and other shared resources. This occurs even if Vista PC is part of a workgroup.

Depends on how your network is setup and if the features in Longhorn Server fits your needs, its not necessarily about having the best of the best. Some old servers at my work place are running NT Server, but the jobs they are doing are really not that important, such placing transactions for orders at the canteen or storing miscellanous data. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Is it possible to add a Vista system into a WinNT domain?

Working fine for me...
"Max" wrote in message > Is it possible to add a Vista system into a WinNT domain?

Yeh, but it's not recommended. To get the best potential out of the network, use Windows Server "Longhorn", or next best thing, Windows Server System 2003 onwards (Enterprise, Standard, R2, SBS etc.)

Brad/Zack, Thanx for the response. I am still unable to join the Vista system to WinNT domain. An attempt to do so, is always resulting in an error message saying "There is no user session key for the specified logon session". I know for sure that I am using the right logon credentials. Appreciate any thoughts on this.
Thanx

I initially installed Vista 32bit on a system while at home and just told it it was on a private network.
When I brought the system to work today to try connecting to my NT domain I had similar problems.
Normally
I would have gone to Control Panel System Change Network Settings Change In order to join a domain.
That didn't work. When It asked me to provide a user name and password for an account that had the join privilages, it rejected mine.
Tried joining two different domains, same thing. Tried entering the user name with the syntex domain\user but that didn't work either.
When
I opened Windows explorer to browse the network, the system said it couldn't find a network.
Even though DHCP worked and I could ping anything on the network.
Then I went back to the Change Network Settings this time I chose the Network ID and followed the wizard. That method worked just fine.
I've now created a computer account in one of the domains. Now when I go to the Vista login screen, and it usually has my default account icon selected, I just chose 'Switch users', and I enter my login name using domain\user
Works
just fine. I can log into either domain with no problem. All the NT login scripts process just fine as well.
